Make Your Own Household Cleaners & Save!

Hey Savvy Shoppers & Savers,

According to a recent study based on government data Americans spend roughly $659 a year on home cleaning supplies. Instead of dishing out your hard earned cash on soaps and cleaners, make your own using basic everyday ingredients. Not only will you be saving money by avoiding brand name products but you’ll also be cleaning with far fewer chemicals. Here are a few easy do-it-yourself remedies.

Laundry Soap:
1 bar of soap grated
8 cups of boiling water
1 cup of laundry soda
1 cup of borax

Mix together, simmer so it can thicken, and let sit overnight.

Dish Soap:
2 cups of Castile soap
1 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar
½ cup of hot water

2 cups of hot water
1 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar
¼ cup of grated soap flakes

Copper Cleaner:
Lemon juice and salt clean copper of stubborn rings and stains.

Unclog Drains:
1 cup of baking soda
½ cup of vinegar

Pour baking soda down the drain first followed by vinegar. Use plunger to work solution through pipes.

Wood Polish:
3 parts olive oil
1 part lemon oil

1 teaspoon of olive oil
1 cup of vinegar

Glass Cleaner:
You can use rubbing alcohol or vinegar to clean glass with out leaving streaks.

Hard Water Stain Remover:
Vinegar and water in a spray bottle work great to get hard water stains off your sink, shower and faucets. Will also remove salt water rings from a boat.

Rust Remover:
Soak rusty nails or tools in Alka-Seltzer to remove rust almost immediately.

Wax Remover:
Get a paper bag and place it over the wax. Then take a hot iron and iron over the paper bag, the wax will bleed onto the paper bag and off your carpet.

Bug Repellents:
Citronella oil, Cinnamon oil, Peppermint oil, Rosemary oil, Cedar oil, Castor oil, Eucalyptus oil or Clove oil – To repel mosquitoes and flies
Baking Soda – To repel ants

How Much of Your Retirement are You Losing Each Year?

Many of us are now taking a more aggressive approach to our retirements or at the very least, becoming more aware of it. How much should I save? When can I retire? Will there be any Social Security left for me? These are the questions that you should be asking yourself. How much you should save and when you can retire rely on your age, income, what you can afford to put away, and the kind of lifestyle you want to have once you do retire. However, if you want to know if there will be any Social Security money for you later…well, that we can answer.

In a recent study done by the Center for Research at Boston College it was found that today’s workers will lose about $2,300 a year for the rest of their careers. Obviously, the younger a worker is – the harder they’re hit since their retirement days are further out. In addition, the more money a worker makes now means they’ll be losing much more than $2,300 each year.

This retirement deficit is due in small part to poor job growth, unemployment, and an overall struggling economy. The main benefactor is stagnant wage growth that occurred during the recession or more precisely 2008. Due to these hurdles and misfortunes Social Security will run out of money much sooner than originally thought.

What Can You Do?

Take your retirement into your own hands. Depending on someone or something else for your future wellbeing isn’t smart. If there is money for you at the end of the tunnel, great. But if there’s not, it’s better to have a back-up plan in place now. Invest in yourself, get a 401k retirement plan in place and tuck a little money away each month for your future. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Like everything, it’s good to have some versatility, that way, if one doesn’t work out as you had hoped, you’ll have a back-up. Buy stocks, invest in Savings Bonds, invest in property, and open a savings account at your local bank. The more options you have at your fingertips the better.

Debt Consolidation Plans & Your Financial Freedom

Hey Savvy Shoppers & Savers,

So you’ve tried paying down your credit cards and loans you you’ve finally come to that point where you know you need help. Now the question is, who do you ask for help and what can they do for you? Many of us look into debt consolidation for assistance which can be a big help when you’ve been fighting an uphill battle for years. However, there are a few things you need to know and consider first.

THE BENEFITS:

The benefits of joining a debt consolidation program are that you can use the aid of a company to pay down your debts quicker than you could by yourself. How do they work? The company will negotiate with your creditors by cutting your debt amount or by attaining lower interest rates. When you join a program you’ll be making one monthly payment to the debt consolidation company versus several payments to multiple companies at different times each month. This can keep you organized and help you avoid missing a payment and incurring late charges. A debt consolidation program should also be able to tell you your payoff date and the amount that you will have saved by joining their program. This is not only motivating but a great way to get a birds-eye view of your financial situation.

FEES:

Is there a fee to join the program? Chances are that there is an initiation fee and a start up fee. Many have one or the other and sometimes both, try to avoid the programs that have both since the point is to put your money to good use each month, not add another company to your payments. Another fee to watch out for is an early payoff fee, this means that if you pay off a creditor early you could get slammed with a fee. Sounds counter-productive doesn’t it? The better debt consolidation programs don’t penalize you for paying off your debts early and those are the companies that truly have your best interest in mind. Try to shop around and find one that doesn’t nickel and dime you to death.

THE CONS:

For some the benefits may not outweigh the cons in the sense that with the added fees you might not come ahead all too much. If this is the case you may just need to find a different company to work with. Your credit may also take a hit when you use a debt consolidation program, it will show up when someone pulls your credit making it hard to get approved for a loan whether new or refinanced. However, if you’re not planning on getting approved for a large loan anytime soon it probably won’t make any difference and in the long run its better to get completely out of debt now by using a program than to string your debts along with you into the next decade.

As you can see there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a program and evaluating your finances. Be sure to talk to a customer service representative and ask all the questions you can. Ask what their fees are, what stipulations they have, and make sure you can call on them whenever you need to. Ask how their program will affect your credit since some look worse on your credit report than others; some are more aggressive where they cut down your debt and interest rates while others will just negotiate lower interest rates for you.

Who to Avoid When You’re Trying to Save

Hey Savvy Shoppers & Savers,

Trying to save is hard enough without surrounding yourself with people that are unsupportive. Much like when you try to go on a diet, a new workout regimen, or get more serious in your work there are always people that try to sway you. It’s inconvenient and puts us dedicated people in a hard spot but they mean well….or do they? We’ve done a little research on this and found that there are certain personality types that are determined to make you fail, not because they WANT you to fail, but because they don’t want to be ‘guilted’ into having to change their lifestyle.

THE BIG SPENDER:

This person lives by the motto, ‘go big or go home’ and tries to live life to the fullest everywhere they go. Expensive trips, pricey dinners, shopping sprees and high-priced cars, whether they have this type of money or are just throwing themselves deeper into debt is another question. This person doesn’t want you to save for one of two reasons; 1) because they’ll feel obligated to change their shopping habits or 2) because they see no value in saving money and don’t understand why you feel you need to. They’ll likely try to put you down or down talk saving telling whatever they need to in order to get you to shell out some plastic.

THE IMPULSE BUYER:

The impulse buyer is someone who just feels the urge to shop on a rolling basis. Whether it’s a grocery store or a boutique, the local coffee shop or a garage sale they must buy SOMETHING. Sure, sometimes it’s harmless and only a few bucks here and there but all those dollars add into some serious dough. This lack of self control can rub off on you, encouraging you to join in on the spending and them to shop even more. Usually impulse buyers don’t see much wrong with their purchases but feel a slight tinge of guilt at the end of the day when they have shopping bags from a variety of stores around town. If you were to partake in that shopping it wouldn’t be such a big deal to them but when they’ve spent a hundred or so and you’ve only spent money on your lunch – it makes them think twice about their shopping habits.

THE DEPENDANT SHOPPER:

This is the friend that feels they need a ‘partner in crime’ so to speak. They feel they need someone to go shopping with in order to justify it. This person is more money conscience than the other two but still has the constant urge to spend their money. Of all the personality types this is the one that would be the easiest to hang out with since you know that your good saving habits will curb their poor shopping habits. However, be prepared for silver-tongued attempts to get you to buy something so they can shop as well.

All of these friends share a similar quality – they don’t want you to save because they have no intention of saving. Their lack of interest in saving is reinforced by surrounding themselves with people that share the same habit. If you’re a close friend of one of these people, they aren’t going to give you kudos on your discipline, they’re going to try to talk you out of it, down-play your efforts, and make it as hard as possible for you to succeed. To maneuver around these ‘friends’ keep yourself busy with non-shopping activities or tell them you just went shopping and spent a ton of money. Is it a lie, yes, but will they really ever know the truth – no. It’ll make them feel better that you’re both on the same page and take the heat off you for a while. If they ask to see what you bought tell them you shipped a present to a family member, spent a ton of money on a house repair, a veterinarian bill, or stuff for the kids. As long as they think you’re spending money too, the tension will go away.

Back to School Savings Tips!

PACK LUNCHES:

This seems like such an obvious one although parents rarely utilize this easy savings tip. How Much Produce Do You Throw Out Each Week?

Hey Savvy Shoppers & Savers,

If you’re anything like me, you buy a ton of fruits and vegetables knowing that they’ll go bad soon but hoping that’ll be motivation to eat them quickly. And, if you’re anything like me, you know that never works. I hate wasting money on anything whether its gas, groceries, pet expenses, or a fancy haircut so I try to figure out ways to get around them whenever possible. One area where I’ve recently improved quite a bit is in the grocery store’s produce section. I used to be the person that went through the section putting anything and everything in the cart – not too worried about prices since produce is relatively cheap. However, in the past year I’ve noticed that about 70% of the produce I was buying was just getting thrown out from rotting. At first it was more of a ‘oh well’ attitude and then it started to make me annoyed trying to think of a way to get around this dilemma. Two of my biggest contributors were that I would buy way too much and I would forget about it soon after I purchased it. I’ve re-vamped my plan of attack and now I can proudly say that I rarely throw out fruit or vegetables.

STEP 1:

Only buy what you KNOW you’re going to use in the next week. Although going to the grocery store each week isn’t the most convenient task, it’s worth it when you end up with fresher produce to cook with and less produce to toss out.

STEP 2:

Keep your refrigerator clean and organized. I found that one of my most common problems was forgetting what I had bought and so I would buy more at my next grocery trip. I would end up with an unfathomable amount of produce and have no clue what to do with it. To get around this, I kept my fridge super clean and organized so that I could clearly see what I had available. This helped me to avoid over-shopping and keep an eye on the produce I had available.

STEP 3:

This is part of step 2 but in more detail; take all the produce out of those clear plastic bags. Keeping all your veggies and fruit in plastic bags and then within your crisper drawers makes it hard to see what you even have left in your inventory. I removed the bags and lined the plastic crisper drawers with a cloth hand towel. I noticed when items were left in bags they kept moisture locked in which in turn made them rot faster. Keeping them clearly displayed in their drawers helped me to see exactly what I had without trying to remember what was in each bag and drawer.

STEP 4:

Be resourceful in the kitchen. When I would see that a bunch of fruit was going to go bad before I could get to it, I would make smoothies. If I had too many tomatoes, bell peppers, or jalapeños, I would make either homemade salsa or marinara. If I had too many blueberries or bananas I would make muffins or banana bread…it was really all about finding alternate ways to use the items I had without just throwing in the towel and buying more.
