Instead of dishing out your hard earned cash on soaps and cleaners, make your own using basic everyday ingredients. Not only will you be saving money by avoiding brand name products but you’ll also be cleaning with far fewer chemicals. Here are a few easy do-it-yourself remedies.
Laundry Soap:
1 bar of soap grated
8 cups of boiling water
1 cup of laundry soda
1 cup of borax
Mix together, simmer so it can thicken, and let sit overnight.
Dish Soap:
2 cups of Castile soap
1 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar
½ cup of hot water
OR
2 cups of hot water
1 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar
¼ cup of grated soap flakes
Copper Cleaner:
Lemon juice and salt clean copper of stubborn rings and stains.
Unclog Drains:
1 cup of baking soda
½ cup of vinegar
Pour baking soda down the drain first followed by vinegar. Use plunger to work solution through pipes.
Wood Polish:
3 parts olive oil
1 part lemon oil
OR
1 teaspoon of olive oil
1 cup of vinegar
Glass Cleaner:
You can use rubbing alcohol or vinegar to clean glass with out leaving streaks.
Hard Water Stain Remover:
Vinegar and water in a spray bottle work great to get hard water stains off your sink, shower and faucets. Will also remove salt water rings from a boat.
Rust Remover:
Soak rusty nails or tools in Alka-Seltzer to remove rust almost immediately.
Wax Remover:
Get a paper bag and place it over the wax. Then take a hot iron and iron over the paper bag, the wax will bleed onto the paper bag and off your carpet.
Bug Repellents:
Citronella oil, Cinnamon oil, Peppermint oil, Rosemary oil, Cedar oil, Castor oil, Eucalyptus oil or Clove oil – To repel mosquitoes and flies
Baking Soda – To repel ants
